The Resurgam Trust Brings Social Saturday to Lisburn

October 5, 2018

On Saturday 13th October from 10.30am – 12 noon The Resurgam Community Development Trust will host a ‘Social Saturday’ event in The Highway Inn, Lisburn which is one of its Social Enterprises.

This local event is being supported by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.  It is part of the UK-wide Social Saturday initiative that has been running since 2014 to shine a spotlight on social enterprises businesses- which trade to meet a social or environmental purpose; and show the difference they are making in communities across the country.

Alderman William Leathem, Chairman of the Council’s Development Committee, speaking about this local event, said: “The Council is pleased to be supporting this initiative through its Boosting Business Mentoring programme run by its Economic Development Unit.  Resurgam Trust has held a successful Social Saturday event for the last two years at which they showcased their products and services.  This event is a good opportunity for residents to hear about volunteering and job opportunities within Resurgam’s six social enterprises and their associated businesses.

“There is lots of excellent work going on in the Lisburn Castlereagh area in the social economic sector and the Council values how important this sector is in providing jobs and contributing to the local economy.  We hope that members of local groups and the local community will call into this event in the Highway Inn to see what is possible for a social enterprise to achieve.”

There are around 70,000 social enterprises in the UK, employing nearly a million people and contributing £24 billion to the economy.  The Resurgam Trust has six social enterprises generating employment for 100 people with an annual turnover of £1.2m and a wage bill of £2m going into the local economy.

Adrian Bird, Resurgam’s Trust Director added: “As an organisation that comprises of a number of Social Enterprises I feel it’s very important that we celebrate Social Saturday to raise the profile of the Social Enterprise Sector particularly locally here in Lisburn Castlereagh. The only difference between a private business and a social enterprise is what the respective organisation does with their profits.

“A social enterprise reinvests their profits back into community therefore any event that raises the awareness of how social enterprises operate is very much welcome; and I would like to thank the Council’s Economic Development Unit for supporting the event again this year.”
