Royal Hillsborough welcomes Scandinavian orienteers for outdoor adventure!
May 11, 2022
Three new permanent orienteering courses have been created in Hillsborough Forest Park, Royal Hillsborough. The courses were recently trialed by approximately 75 Scandinavian Park World Tour orienteers who had just completed the All Ireland Championships in County Kerry.
The courses were created by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council (LCCC) in partnership with Lagan Valley Orienteers to re-establish the area as a prime location for outdoor adventure.
Mayor of LCCC, Alderman Stephen Martin, who hosted the orienteers at a reception in Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, said: “There is a wonderful history of orienteering in the council area dating back to the 1970s and we’re delighted to welcome our Scandinavian visitors to preview the new course.
“Royal Hillsborough is a unique tourism destination. By investing in further enhancements to Hillsborough Forest and the public realm, we are beginning to see a ‘whole village’ tourism experience for families, foodies and explorers. Royal Hillsborough now has something for everyone.”
Development Committee Chair, Alderman Amanda Grehan, added: “On behalf of the council, I would like to thank Lagan Valley Orienteers for their support and commitment to enhancing the orienteering opportunities in the Lisburn Castlereagh area.
“The recreational value of the forest park has been recognised by both the council and the Forest Service. Through regular map updating, Hillsborough Forest is now able to facilitate regular orienteering events, appealing to both day and overnight visitors and giving it another unique edge to its tourism offering.”
The three courses have been designed for top orienteers, as well as providing opportunities for beginners and competitors. Speaking about the visit, Jens Kristian from Norway said: “We feel privileged to be hosted in the beautiful surroundings of Royal Hillsborough and we thank the council for its hospitality. We always enjoy our trips to Ireland and the new permanent courses in Hillsborough Forest are a good reason to return.”
