LCCC and SERC partner to run sustainable fashion competition for students

Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council recently partnered with South Eastern Regional College, Lisburn (SERC) to run a sustainable fashion competition for SERC students.

The competition encouraged students to look at fashion in a different way and learn to repair, personalise and upcycle items from their wardrobe.

Following a series of sustainable fashion themed talks and workshops, organised by SERC tutors during Big Green Week in September, students took part in a competition to rescue, repair or reimagine an unwanted item of clothing to show how creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand by transforming an item of pre-loved clothing into a new piece.  And the results were outstanding!

The creations are on display at Island Arts Centre, Lisburn 19-26 November for European Week for Waste Reduction.

Prizes, generously donated by Cookstown Textile Recyclers, SERC Enterprise and the Council were presented to the competition winners and shortlisted students at the recent Exhibition launch.

Councillor Martin Gregg, Chair of Environmental Services said:  “I am amazed by the quality of the competition entries on display at Island Arts Centre. They are sure to inspire visitors to think about rescuing, repairing and reimagining their own clothing."

Ken Webb, SERC Principal & Chief Executive said: “I am delighted that so many of our students have engaged with the competition, with the support of our tutors. The imagination, skills and techniques shown in the finished pieces are exceptional."
