Lisburn City Centre Celebrates Bike Week
June 14, 2016
To kick off Bike Week 2016, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council hosted a ‘Bike to Breakfast’ and ‘Spinathon’ event in Market Square, Lisburn City Centre.
Bike Week, supported by Travelwise NI, is a Department For Infrastructure initiative to encourage the use of sustainable transport options such as walking, cycling, public transport or car sharing. Travelwise aims to encourage and advise commuters, employers and schools in Northern Ireland on the sustainable methods of the travel and the benefits each option brings.
Chair of the Council’s Development Committee, Alderman Allan Ewart said, ‘Cycling and public transport are a great way to travel to work into and around the City Centre. We are keen to show everyone how accessible the area really is for all our visitors. We are also lucky to have a great cycle network on our doorstep with excellent cycle routes. I am delighted to see cyclists here today grabbing a bite to eat before they start the working day, along with spin enthusiasts who have taken the time to participate during their lunch-break.
As part of Bike Week, the Council will also host workshops for the National Standards cycle training initiative with pupils from Pond Park Primary School participating in these afternoon sessions, situated in Market Square.
The Council would like to thank JM Hanna Cycles, Cycle Zone and Brian Jordan Fitness Training for their support during Bike Week.
Did you know you can ‘Re-cycle’ your unwanted bicycles at The Cutts Household Recycling Centre?
The Council works in partnership with East Belfast Mission to operate a bicycle reuse scheme. If bikes are in poor condition they are still acceptable! This project involves the repair and refurbishment of bicycles.
You can also purchase repaired bicycles at the Recycle bike shop at the Skainos building on the Newtownards Road Belfast. Please see click here for more information.
