Council Receives its Coat of Arms

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is delighted to have officially received its new Coat of Arms from the Royal College of Arms in London.  

It is the first of the new 11 super councils to have undertaken this task.

At a recent Special Council Meeting Mr William Hunt, Windsor Herald, from the Royal College of Arms presented the new Coat of Arms to the Mayor, Councillor Thomas Beckett; Dr Theresa Donaldson, Chief Executive; and Alderman William Leathem, Chairman of the Council’s Governance and Audit Committee.

The Mayor, Councillor Beckett, receiving the Coat of Arms, said: “William Hunt has played an integral role in the development of the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council crest that has been officially presented to the Council at this meeting.  This crest has been created with elements of the former two council’s Coats of Arms representing the coming together of our two areas.  The receipt of this crest is a milestone for the Council and provides us with an official mark for all civic, ceremonial and legal occasions.”

Deputy Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim, Freddie Hall and Freemen of the City were also presented with a plaque bearing the new Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council Coat of Arms.

Alderman Leathem added: “Local Government Reform started a number of years ago, however, when in Shadow Form during 2014/15, the Council undertook a branding exercise and as part of this requested the creation of a new council crest.

“As a new council created through the merger of two councils there was a strong feeling amongst the Elected Members and Officers that it was important to preserve and recognise the significance of a formal Council Crest.  Such a strong emblem for the new area is key and works in tandem with the new brand. As Chairman of Governance & Audit Committee I am delighted that our work has come to fruition."
