Council to Turn Headquarters Gold for Childhood Cancer

September 24, 2015

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council will be lighting Lagan Valley Island up gold from Friday 25th – Mon 28th September to raise awareness of childhood cancer.

This is the third year the Council’s Headquarters will be basked in hues of gold in support of the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children, CLIC Sargent and Childhood Cancer Foundation.

The Mayor, Councillor Thomas Beckett, speaking about the ‘Light It Up Gold’ campaign, said: “I am delighted that the Council has supported the Light It Up Gold Campaign and will play its part in raising awareness of this dreadful disease, which is sadly becoming more common amongst children and young people.  Cancer is a condition that changes lives in a heartbeat and involves a long journey of hospitals and treatments, affecting all the family.

“Increased awareness of childhood cancer will hopefully improve early detection and promote recovery.  We are glad to show our support for the ‘Light it Up Gold’ awareness-raising initiative,” concluded Councillor Beckett.

The decision of the Corporate Services Committee to support this initiative was ratified at the recent Full Council meeting.

Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of the Council’s Corporate Services Committee added: “When you are out and about in the community you hear all kinds of news, and it is always devastating to hear of a young person being diagnosed with cancer.  By joining the Light It Up Gold Campaign the Council hopes to highlight the sterling work of the NICF for Children and how it supports young cancer sufferers and their families across Northern Ireland,” concluded Alderman Tinsley.

Childhood Cancer Foundation is committed to raising public awareness of the issues surrounding childhood cancer, developing early diagnosis programmes amongst healthcare professionals, advocating for improved services for children affected by cancer and assisting to fund vital services for children and families affected by this disease.  For more information on its work log on to www.childhoodcancer.ie
