Victory Celebrations at the 2018 Lisburn City Triathlon & Aquathlon

Over 150 participants challenged themselves to the ultimate test of endurance when they took part in the 2018 Lisburn City Triathlon and Aquathlon at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex on Sunday 29th July.
Organised by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, in conjunction with Triathlon Ireland, the Triathlon involved a 750m pool swim, 24km cycle and 5km run. The Junior Aquathlon, for children aged 16 years and under, consisted of a 200m pool swim and 2km run, while the new Adult Aquathlon saw participants competing in a 750m swim and 5k run.
The women’s Triathlon kick started proceedings with previous winner Heather Foley finishing well ahead in first place, followed by Anne Paul holding her own in second place and Naomi Broughton finishing a strong third place.
Luke McCarron took first place in the men’s Triathlon, closely followed by Rob Lawrence in second place and Clifford Rodgers crossing the finish line just behind in third place.
In the new Adult Aquathlon, the event was keenly contended with Rosie Barratt taking the winner’s trophy. While in the Junior Aquathlon, 43 enthusiastic and inspirational young people got their moment to shine and put their training into practice with Luke Kelly taking top honours in the boys under 16 section and Zoe Fleming finishing in first place in the girls under 16 event. In the boys under 12 section, Frank Buchanan finished in first place, while Charlotte Smyth celebrated coming first in the girls under 12 section.
Speaking about the event, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure and Community Development Committee, Alderman Paul Porter said: “I would like to congratulate all those who participated in the 2018 Triathlon and Aquathlon and pushed themselves to the limit in pursuit of their personal goals. I have great respect for all the athletes, both young and old, who have put in many hours of training in order to prepare for such a demanding sporting event.
“This year, the Council was also delighted to introduce the Adult Aquathlon to inspire a new generation of athletes to get involved and hopefully provide a valuable stepping stone to progress onto the Triathlon event in future years. It was also encouraging to see so many young people rising to the challenge of the Junior Aquathlon and proving that physical activity can be fun!
“The Council has a proud history of organising high calibre sporting events such as the Lisburn Half Marathon, 10K Road Race and Fun Run in June as well as a diverse range of sports programmes throughout the year. I am delighted that the Triathlon & Aquathlon is another successful date in the sporting calendar, attracting participants across Northern Ireland to the City of Lisburn & Castlereagh.
