UK Pickleball Championship success
June 20, 2017
Members of Lisburn Pickleball Team are celebrating medal success, following their successful singles and doubles performance at the recent UK Pickleball Championship.
Over 200 competitors from 13 countries participated in the 3 day event, which saw Lisburn team member, Christine Duncan achieve a Gold Medal in the Ladies Singles, following a closely contended final against Madrid. Christine then went on to win a Silver Medal in the mixed doubles in the 3.5 – 5.0 category along with doubles partner Justin Gilmore. Catherine Gleave also won a Bronze Medal in the Ladies Single in the 1.0-3.5 category.
Congratulating the team, Former Chairman of the Council’s Leisure & Community Development Committee, Councillor Tim Morrow said, “Straight from the USA, Pickleball is a fun racket sport that combines elements of tennis, platform tennis, badminton and table tennis. It is a great sport for young people and those wishing to keep active later in life with fast paced and challenging rallies, which can be played for fun or at a competitive level.
“I am delighted that the sport has grown from strength to strength within Lisburn & Castlereagh and we now have a team which is achieving major competition success. I would like to congratulate the team on their performance in the UK Championships and hope their success inspires others to take up the sport.
“Finally I would like to thank Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh for their financial support and wish the team every success as they strive towards the European Championships in Amsterdam next year.”
