Superb Turnout for the Lisburn City Triathlon & Aquathlon 2016

August 15, 2016

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, in conjunction with Triathlon Ireland, welcomed athletes from across the country to the 2016 Lisburn City Triathlon and Aquathlon, at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex.

The annual sporting event took place on Sunday 7th August, with a total of 142 athletes taking part, both young and old, demonstrating strength and endurance across the following disciplines; a 750m pool swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.

The men’s Triathlon kick started proceedings with Paul Carroll finishing a strong first place, with Ryan Sharkey finishing a close second. In the ladies Triathlon, the impressive Heather Foley glided through to take first place, followed by Emma-Jane Sharkey taking the runner up spot.

In the Aquathlon event, 42 enthusiastic and inspirational young people had their moment to shine and put their training into practice across a continuous, two-stage race involving a 200m pool swim and 2km run. Ewan Adams took top honours in the boys under 12 section, while Ella Haynes finished in first place in the girls under 12 section.  In the boys under 16 section, William Pinkerton took first place, with Anna Johnston celebrated coming first in the girls under 16 section.

Speaking about the event, the Chairman of the Leisure and Community Development Committee, Councillor Tim Morrow said: “I was extremely impressed by the level of participants who took part in this year’s event, from the young and old, to the more experienced and not forgetting the beginners.  I hold great admiration for those who literally went the extra mile and pushed themselves to the limit to complete what is one of the most demanding endurance events.

“I commend everyone who took part in the event, with a special well done to the winners. It’s not every day you can say, you have completed a Triathlon!

“This event follows the tremendous success of the Run Lisburn Coca-Cola Half Marathon, 10K Road Race and Fun Run, and the Council is extremely proud to have hosted yet another great event. We endeavour to encourage and promote physical activity amongst adults and young people, from a healthy lifestyle aspect and most importantly, the enjoyment factor!

“I would like to thank all the organisers and volunteers involved in making the event a great success”, concluded Councillor Morrow.
