Statement of Sympathy from Mayor Carson on the passing of Billy Bingham, MBE
June 16, 2022
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is deeply saddened to hear of the death of local sporting legend Billy Bingham, MBE
On behalf of the council, the Mayor, Councillor Scott Carson expressed his sympathy on the death of Billy Bingham, MBE at the age of 90.
He said: “We are saddened by the news that Northern Ireland international footballer and football manager Billy Bingham has passed away. As a player, his first professional club was Glentoran, whom he played for between 1948 and 1950. After moving to England he made 227 appearances for Sunderland.
“Billy proudly played for Northern Ireland in World Cup final tournaments. He played alongside former Lambeg man Jimmy McIlroy in 1958 when the team reached the quarter finals. Billy is the most successful manager of the Northern Ireland team having led them to World Cup victory over Spain in 1982. I have no doubt Billy holds a unique place in the hearts of local football fans.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Billy’s family and friends at this difficult time. We send our deepest sympathies to the Bingham family as they come to terms with the loss of their loved one.”
