January 21, 2022
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has today launched its Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Programme to celebrate 70 years of dedicated service by Her Majesty the Queen. With local communities at the heart of the programme, the first initiative is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Community Grant Fund, which is now open for applications with up to £500 per group available. The Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Alderman Stephen Martin outlined his hopes for the programme;
“We are ready to mark the Platinum Jubilee Year with an exciting and inclusive programme of events. We hope these events will create a feel good factor and memories for years to come.
“The Platinum Jubilee is an historic moment in time. From Dundonald to Royal Hillsborough and everywhere in between, we look forward to all the opportunities our programme will bring. We want to look back on how our community life has changed over the past seven decades as well as playing our full civic role in the planned nationally organised events.
“It is fitting that we launch our community grant fund today at the Lisburn Museum where the Queen and Prince Philip made one of their first stops on the Coronation Tour of the Home Nations in 1953.”
Councillor Hazel Legge, Chair of the council’s Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Working Group, added;
“Our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee programme includes something for everyone. We have arts programmes, outdoor events, historic lectures and exhibitions to name a few. As part of the national programme, we will also be hosting a beacon lighting ceremony and a service of thanksgiving at the beginning of June. I am particularly excited about being part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project where we intend to plant 70 trees, one to represent each and every year of the Queen’s reign. It is a privilege to lead the Council’s Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Working Group and I look forward to the weeks and month ahead.”

Councillor Thomas Beckett, Leisure & Community Development Vice-Chair explaining more about the grants said;
“We are delighted to be offering up to £500 to local groups who want to host community events and activities as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year. This creates endless opportunities for communities to celebrate the Queen’s 70 year reign in a way that is meaningful and beneficial to them. I hope this funding brings about positive community spirit and I look forward to seeing our communities’ plans in action.”
