Pedal Power comes to Dundonald Ice Bowl

The second round of the Kinning’s Cycle Cross was held recently at Dundonald International Ice Bowl with over 300 cyclists taking part in energy packed races across the Castlereagh hillside immediately behind the facility.

Competitors from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, participated in the eagerly awaited heat with races taking place at junior, men and ladies categories.

The Under 16’s boy’s race was won by Lee Harvey with Clodagh Gallagher taking 1st place in the girl’s category. Dean Harvey won the under 14’s boy’s race with Katie Neill scooping the top prize in the girl’s heat.

The ladies category was fiercely contested with Beth McCluskey taking 1st place, Michelle Geoghegan achieving 2nd place and local rider Trudy Brown taking home a well-deserved 3rd place.

David Broome from Dromara Cycling Club won the B race with Jonnie Boyle lifting 2nd place and Richard Gaffkin 3rd place. The A race was the last round of the afternoon and saw a fast and furious race with Roger Aiken from Asea Wheelworx winning the heat, Graham Boyd taking 2nd place and Barry Kellet achieving 3rd place.

Councillor Tim Morrow, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure & Community Development Committee was delighted to host the event at Dundonald International Ice Bowl, “It is fantastic to host the 2nd heat of the Kinning’s Cycle Cross and welcome cyclists and spectators from far and wide to the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area. The quality of the racing has been terrific to watch with plenty of high energy heats and close finishes, making it a great sport to spectate at whether you are a keen cyclist like myself or just enjoying a day out with the family.
