PCSP supports local Awareness Training to tackle Domestic & Sexual Violence in Lisburn Castlereagh
February 16, 2022
To help address the increasing incidences of domestic and sexual violence in the local area, Lisburn & Castlereagh Policing Community Safety Partnership has funded Onus Training to deliver Safe Place training to local community groups and individuals.
These sessions will take place online on Monday 21st February at 10.30am and Tuesday 1st March at 2.00pm. Given those working in the hair and beauty industry have frontline access to potential victims there is a dedicated session for them on Thursday 3rd March at 7.00pm.
In February 2021, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council was delighted to receive the Safe City Charter status. This was attributed to the true partnership working across statutory organisations, local churches and businesses to offer support to anyone in Lisburn Castlereagh affected by domestic violence and abuse.
Mayor Martin, speaking about the importance of supporting those affected by domestic and sexual violence commented: “It was only last month we came together as a community to express solidarity with the Murphy family who tragically lost their daughter Ashling. Day in day out local organisations work to end such violence. I am delighted our PCSP has provided funding to Onus to help Lisburn Castlereagh be a better and safer community for everyone. As a ‘Safe City’ the Lisburn Castlereagh community is saying it has a zero tolerance for domestic abuse.”
Councillor Michelle Guy, Chair of the Lisburn & Castlereagh PCSP, added: “Through the work of PCSP we strive to reduce the incidents of domestic violence and abuse in our area. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious or cultural background. There are many forms of domestic abuse and children in the family can also be affected.
“In our council area we have seen a 10.3% increase in the incidences of domestic and sexual violence over the same April- September period in 2020 and 2021. This unfortunately is in line with the increased figures across Northern Ireland. During the festive period just past there was an increase of up to 25% in domestic and sexual violence cases reported on Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
“I am pleased we can once again fund local training sessions on this important matter through organisations such as Onus, Atlas Women’s Centre, Men’s Alliance, LCC Community Trust, Carryduff Taekwondo and Damask Outreach Group.”
