New Sensory Wildlife Garden in Moira Demesne

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has received £46,625 towards the development of a Sensory Wildlife Garden in Moira Demesne from the Alpha Funding programme.

This resource has been designed to bring nature back into the lives of residents.  The Council hopes it will be very popular with local schools and community groups as they enjoy the wildlife and flowers in this popular green space in Moira.

The Council hosted a ‘Wildlife Walk for Wellbeing’ on 6th April for members of the Moira Friendship Group.  This event was a council initiative delivered through the Castlereagh-Safe and Well programme to promote how nature can support health and wellbeing.

Councillor Tim Morrow, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure & Development Committee speaking at the event, said: “The Wildlife Walk was really interesting and everybody enjoyed the tree and bird identification session. On behalf of the Council I would like to thank the Alpha Programme for its invaluable funding and Groundwork NI for its support during the application stages of this community project.  I certainly enjoyed taking time out to relax by bird watching and listening to the sights and sounds of local wildlife as I walked around the park.

“Nature is a natural remedy to assist those in our communities who are physically inactive, overweight or suffer from mental health problems.  Studies have shown that with easy access to nature people are three times more likely to participate in physical activity and 40% less likely to be overweight.  It has also demonstrated the positive effect of green spaces and wildlife on mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, and increasing positivity. So please come along to Moira Demesne and enjoy the local wildlife whilst walking or running around this green space,” concluded Councillor Morrow
