New Mayor Gets Down to Business
June 21, 2016
Since his election to the Office of Mayor, Councillor Brian Bloomfield has been busy meeting Elected Members and Council staff about his Mayoral Engagements and plans. The Mayor’s first official engagement was fittingly, to hold a short wreath- laying service to commemorate the six soldiers who lost their lives in Lisburn in June 1988.
He has also carried out a number of other engagements including officiating at the Lisburn Half Marathon; one of the biggest events in the Council’s sporting calendar.
Councillor Brian Bloomfield MBE will represent the Council as First Citizen across all parts of the Lisburn and Castlereagh area.
The Mayor said: “It’s my intention to get involved in activities and initiatives in all parts of the Council area. I will promote the Council to the best of my ability and I am looking forward to meeting well-known acquaintances and new people, groups, sporting clubs and organisations. I am keen to inspire support for my Mayoral Charity, details of which I will launch at the Full Council Meeting on the 28th June and I hope people will support me in that.”
The new Mayor is best-known to many as a former Vice Principal of Wallace High School. He held this post from September 1988 until his retirement some years ago in June 2008. Over those 20 years he has worked with hundreds of students, parents, educational professionals, voluntary organisations, sporting and statutory bodies and maintained his life-long interest in rugby football.
Councillor Bloomfield has been married to Rosalind since 1973. She is a former Special Needs teacher. The couple have two children, Jonathan and Clare, and became grandparents in October 2015 with the arrival of their grandson, Conor.
The Mayor has had a long and distinguished career in the field of education, and has maintained his keen interest in rugby from his early years in school and club competitions, to his coaching work with the IRFU Coaching Committee.
Councillor Brian Bloomfield was awarded the MBE for services to Rugby Football in Northern Ireland, an honour he treasures.
