Mayor Martin marks Accession Day
February 6, 2022
Mayor Martin today marks Accession Day (Sunday 6th February 2022) being the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne with the Union Flag being flown at Lagan Valley Island, the Council’s civic headquarters.
Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Alderman Stephen Martin said "Today we give thanks for Her Majesty’s lifetime of faithful service leading us as Head of State over the course of the last seven decades. We remember also the Queen’s late father, King George VI who passed away when the Queen was 25 years old.
"The Queen is a beacon of hope, integrity and dignity at the very centre of our national life. Through challenging times, the Queen has had the unique ability to comfort and guide us. Over seventy years Her Majesty’s dedication to duty has lifted her people whether at home or through her tireless commitment to the Commonwealth of Nations abroad.
"I am reminded of the solemn pledge the then Princess Elizabeth made on her 21st birthday: ‘I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service.’
"Surely there can be no doubt the Queen’s vow to her people has been fulfilled beyond measure and for which we join with communities across the country in deep appreciation.
"As we look forward to the festivities planned to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, I hope as many people as possible are able to join together in our diverse and inclusive programme of celebrations."
