Mayor Marks End of Armed Forces Week

June 30, 2015

Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett laid a wreath on behalf of the Council at Knockagh Monument on Sunday 28th June with fellow Elected Members.

Councillor Beckett laid the wreath to remember those who lost their lives on the battlefields during both World Wars.  The Ceremony in Co. Antrim marked the end of Armed Forces Week across the UK.

Speaking about the event, Councillor Beckett said: “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to lay a wreath and commemorate the ultimate sacrifice paid by so many soldiers in the two World Wars.

“In today’s society the Council recognises the dangers faced by those fighting in battles on foreign soil and the reported loss of human lives and the infliction of serious injuries humbles us, in the face of such bravery, camaraderie, and dedication to duty.  It was for these very reasons that it was a privilege to remember those servicemen honoured by the Knockagh Monument,” he concluded.
