Mayor hosts Hillsborough Fort Guard at Lagan Valley Island

Mayor Martin was delighted to welcome Nicholas Hill, 9th Marquess of Downshire and his Hillsborough Fort Guard to Lagan Valley Island.

Commenting on the reception the Mayor said: “The receipt of the Letters Patent granting Royal status to Hillsborough was one of the highlights of my term.  At each event we held in Royal Hillsborough the Hillsborough Fort Guard supported us adding a historical and traditional element to them.  I had the pleasure of meeting the Marquess at the Hillsborough Fort Guard warrant ceremony last July. 

“I believe it was very fitting that in the same year Royal Hillsborough came into effect and for the first time in over a century the Marquess held an official event to establish Fort Warders at Hillsborough Fort. Each of the members of the Fort Guard are dedicated to engaging with the local community, visitors and organisations to speak of their role within the village of Royal Hillsborough.”

Mayor Martin presented each of his guests with a commemorative Royal Hillsborough linen napkin.
