Mark Remembrance Sunday from home

November 2, 2020

As Remembrance Sunday approaches, the council would like to advise residents it will live stream the Royal British Legion’s two services at 11am on Sunday 8th November.

A poppy wreath will be laid in Lisburn by the Mayor, Councillor Nicholas Trimble and in Hillsborough by Deputy Mayor, Councillor Jenny Palmer.

Alderman Paul Porter, Corporate Services Committee Chairman said: “Through our corporate Facebook page, @LisburnCastlereagh we will live stream both Remembrance Sunday events.  In this period of restricted gatherings, the Lisburn Branch of the Royal British Legion and the council would like everyone to remember those who lost their lives in a safe manner.  We encourage residents to respect the restrictions that are being adhered to by the Royal British Legion and ourselves.

“Through live streaming everyone can be part of a local service to remember the fallen soldiers from wars that scarred our past.  It is important we all remember the bravery of the local men and women who fought in them. I would like to extend my thoughts to those who are grieving or who have suffered a loss, as Remembrance Sunday approaches.  This is a very poignant time of the year.”

If you have a loved one that you would like to remember the Lisburn Branch of the Royal British Legion and ourselves would ask that you please visit the War Memorial at a time outside of the planned services. The Garden of Remembrance is already in place at the War Memorial to accommodate this request at a time of restrictions on gatherings.

The Mayor, Councillor Nicholas Trimble added: “In the current pandemic it is important that we follow the guidance to keep each other safe.  Unfortunately, this means changes to Remembrance Sunday events in our council area.  They have been scaled back to allow only 15 people to be in attendance in both Lisburn and Hillsborough.

“When the Deputy Mayor and I lay wreaths on Remembrance Sunday this will be on behalf of the council and its residents.  These wreaths are a mark of remembrance for those servicemen and women who have lost their lives through war.

“Remembrance Sunday is a sombre occasion. It is a time of reflection and gratitude to those individuals who selflessly fought for the freedom and rights of future generations.  As First Citizen I hope that residents will follow our live streaming of these local remembrance services.”
