Maghaberry to Host Last Community Conversation of This Series

August 5, 2015

Maghaberry Community Centre will host the last in the current set of ‘Community Conversations’ with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council on Thursday 20th August from 7.00pm – 9.00pm.

Well-attended public meetings were held across the Council area from late July to hear the views of residents of all ages.  Be sure to come along to Maghaberry on the 20th August and ‘have you say’ to shape how our new council area will deliver key services.

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is responsible for producing a community plan for the area that will endeavour to address elements of concern to residents, which include health and social care, emergency services, leisure facilities, tourism, economic development and waste management issues.

Alderman William Leathem, Chairman of the Council’s Governance and Audit Committee, speaking about the sessions to date said: “At each session there has been an excellent cross-representation of residents, public sector organisations, emergency services and community groups.  The topics discussed at the consultation sessions will allow a community plan to be created and allow us to shape our city over the coming years.

“Of particular note familiar themes across the earlier sessions were to build a strong tourism offer, improve the night-time economy, improve transport links within the Council area and ensure the needs of young people and vulnerable people are met.

“I would encourage those interested in playing their part in shaping the future of service delivery in the area to come along to this last session in the current set of community engagement meetings.  Maghaberry and Moira like other areas throughout the Council has a strong community spirit and I look forward to another well turned out event,” concluded Alderman Leathem.

Echoing the comments of Alderman Leathem, the Council’s Chief Executive, Dr Theresa Donaldson, said that community planning provided a critical opportunity for services and communities to work together to develop a community plan that will include the social, environmental and economic needs of the new Council.

“The Community Plan should be an inclusive, long term vision for the future – we are relying on the Community to support the conversations.  Community involvement is the key to a successful community plan,” said Dr Donaldson.

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council would encourage its communities to get involved and help shape a successful community plan that is for the betterment of all.
