Maghaberry gets ready for Ulster in Bloom
June 1, 2018
The community in Maghaberry has been working with the Council to prepare the village for its first ever entry into Translink Ulster in Bloom, which launches in June.
This annual horticultural competition is celebrating its 40th year in 2018 and Maghaberry is delighted to have the opportunity to show its civic pride to the judges alongside other villages across the Council area.
Maghaberry Primary School pupils have played their part in this community entry through the planting of wildflower plugs and seeds in the Play Area beside the Community Centre. This is the start of many projects planned by the village over the coming months.
Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure & Community Development Committee, said: “The Council works very closely with communities across the Lisburn Castlereagh area to create wonderful, award winning floral displays. I am delighted that Maghaberry has agreed to be part of this year’s Translink Ulster in Bloom competition. The community has embraced the competition and the variety of projects they have planned include gardening clubs, youth clubs, church groups and the support of a number of local businesses.
“I had the opportunity to join the pupils of the local primary school at their flower planting; and the planting of these wildflowers helps with biodiversity through providing pollinators with vital food. I would ask the local residents to be mindful of this newly planted area and to keep off this flowerbed to give the wildflowers every success of blooming.”
The three judging criteria of Translink Ulster in Bloom are horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility.
