Local Landmarks to Light up Blue for VE Day 75

May 7, 2020

As part of its VE Day 75 celebrations, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council will be lighting a number of its facilities blue.

Alderman James Tinsley, Armed Forces Champion and Chairman of Leisure & Community Development said: “As lights illuminated the United Kingdom after years of being ‘blacked out’ to mark Victory in Europe Day, 75 years later the council will be lighting some of its facilities blue.  Lagan Valley Island, Castle Gardens, the Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum and the ISLAND Arts Centre will be ‘hues of blue’ each evening from 8th to the 10th May.

“Other celebrations at the end of the war included street parties which unfortunately are not possible to do to mark this the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. However, over the weekend we would encourage our residents to consider celebrating in their homes, gardens and workplaces.  It is important we take the time to celebrate and remember all those from the Second World War generation who lost their lives in the what remains the most horrific war of all times.

“The council will be showing a number of virtual celebration videos over the course of its VE Day 75 celebration weekend so please log onto our corporate Facebook and Twitter accounts to join with us in celebrating this poignant occasion.”

To help our residents get into the spirit of VE Day 75 celebrations our ISLAND Arts team has designed videos on how to make VE75 bunting and tips on how to create 1945 hair and makeup styles.  These are available on the council’s website and social media channels.
