Lisburn Switched On for Christmas

November 4, 2015

With Christmas just around the corner, the festive season will start with the annual Switching On of the Lights on Thursday 19th November in the recently refurbished Market Square.

This ever-popular family event will include pre-parade entertainers from 6.00pm, music from the main stage area, a lantern parade and a city centre light display.

The Mayor, Councillor Thomas Beckett, speaking about the event, said: “I am looking forward to welcoming thousands to this annual event; and switching on the City’s Christmas Lights.  I am delighted there will be musical entertainment from the City’s very own School Choir of the Year, Pond Park Primary and the local Dundonald Community Concert Band

“There will be a festive atmosphere on the evening and families are encouraged to come along and enjoy the evening from 6.00pm with Pete Snodden compering,” concluded Councillor Beckett.

Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of the Corporate Services Committee, added: “It is fantastic the Switch-On has returned to the City Centre.  On arrival, balloon modellers will be present in Bow Street and festive Christmas Characters will welcome families.

“The Council is delighted that SERC’s performing arts students will be part of the event as they distribute giveaways to the crowd.  Local schoolchildren from five primary schools will take part in the Lantern Parade carrying their homemade lanterns, accompanied by professional carnival performers.”

Santa Claus will make an appearance to wish all the boys and girls a very Merry Christmas.

Alderman Allan Ewart, Chairman of the Development Committee, said: “I am delighted that the new event space will play centre stage at the Switch On this year.  I hope that everyone who attends the event will enjoy the impressive city centre light display that will take place after the Parade has travelled through the City.

“The Council will be holding a series of events in Market Square and across the Council area throughout the festive season.  Be sure to keep an eye out in local media for further details on these events.”

If you are attending the event, please park in one of the City Centre car parks and come join the festivities in Bow Street, Market Square and Market Street.
