Lisburn City Library opening hours to remain the same
August 5, 2016
Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council's Strategic Community Planning Partnership, Alderman William Leathem has welcomed the recent decision made by the Communities Minister Paul Givan MLA that the proposed reduction in library opening hours will no longer go ahead.
The announcement comes following a public consultation, conducted by Libraries NI, to reduce library opening hours, which over 8,000 responses were received.
Alderman William Leathem initially proposed to support the retention of existing opening hours at a Corporate Services Committee, and is extremely pleased with the outcome of the public consultation.
He said: "It is quite clear that this announcement indicates that the views and opinions of those who supported the public consultation were well and truly heard. I am delighted that the additional funding of £225,000 has been made available by the Communities Minister to prevent the reduction of hours.
"Lisburn City Library is viewed as a central hub and an invaluable resource within the community. The facility provides a platform where both adults and children can visit for various reasons, from reading to online research or attending one of the many activities and reading classes available. I commend everyone involved in making this significant decision happen.
"Just recently I attended Lisburn City Library for the launch of an inspirational exhibition called, "My Journey, My Voice", organised by Libraries NI in conjunction with Royal College of Speech & Therapy, which aims to raise the awareness of communication disability. I extend my admiration and credit to the organisers involved in this heart-warming exhibition and I would encourage everyone to come along and visit when they can," concluded, Alderman Leathem.
