Lisburn & Castlereagh Renews Fairtrade City Status

Lisburn & Castlereagh has successfully renewed its Fairtrade City status for two years as part of the Council’s commitment to promoting Fairtrade principles.  This status includes Lisburn City and the towns of Carryduff, Dundonald, Hillsborough, Culcavy and Moira.

The achievement was celebrated at the Fairtrade flowerbed on Hillsborough Roundabout which was planted to mark the occasion and highlight Fairtrade across the Council area.

Lisburn & Castlereagh was first awarded Fairtrade City status in 2017 by both the UK Fairtrade Foundation & Fairtrade Ireland, in recognition of the strong support for Fairtrade within the City, and the achievement of five qualifying goals, such as a wide availability of Fairtrade products in local shops and catering outlets, high levels of support from local people, businesses, the council, faith groups and schools.

Alderman Allan Ewart MBE, Vice-Chair of the Council’s Development Committee said: “We are delighted that Lisburn & Castlereagh continues to be a Fairtrade City. It’s great that more local residents and businesses are becoming aware of what Fairtrade means and the difference it makes in many lives around the world.”

Dr Stange - Consul General, St. Vincent and the Grenadines added: “Thanks to the ongoing support of the council, public and campaigners, an increasing number of farmers in developing countries are now selling their products on Fairtrade terms, bringing them a stable income, and the chance to trade their way out of poverty.”
