Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council marks completion of £2.3m public realm scheme

A £2.3m public realm scheme which was recently completed in Lisburn City Centre has transformed the streetscape and connectivity of the city centre linking into the existing Public Realm space.

Marking the completion of the scheme, Alderman Jim Dillon MBE took a tour of the city centre with representatives from the Department for Communities to highlight the improvements that have been made including new paving, kerbing, street lighting and street furniture.

The Department for Communities invested approximately £1.2m and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council invested a further £1.1m.

Alderman Jim Dillon MBE, Vice-Chairman of the council’s Development Committee said:  “The council is pleased to have supported the Lisburn Linkages Public Realm Scheme. These works create linkages to the important assets across our city centre and complement the existing award winning scheme. Our positive partnership working with the Department for Communities on this successful project once again demonstrates the strength of collaborative working between central and local government and what can be achieved. Investment in the city centre infrastructure is important to improve the environment for visitors and locals who now, more than ever, will be keen to have the opportunity to move around the area easily and safely. We hope everyone shopping local enjoys their experience when they visit Lisburn today and in the future.”

Welcoming the completion, Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey added: “The recently completed Lisburn Linkages scheme is another example of how my Department is continuing to invest in the regeneration of Lisburn city centre.  This scheme complements the earlier phases of public realm works which rejuvenated the main core of the city centre.  It has transformed both the physical appearance and the accessibility of the key linkages into the city centre and has undoubtedly created a more attractive, welcoming environment. 

“I know this has been a difficult time for our town centres. There will be a time, when it is safe to do so, when this city centre is bustling again and this investment will hopefully assist the city centre to recover and ultimately transform itself after the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
