Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council Light Up 4 HD

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council will join iconic buildings around the world and light up blue tonight to raise awareness of Huntington’s Disease. 

This international campaign will see buildings, monuments, businesses and community spaces take part in a worldwide act of support to shine a light on this deadly brain disease which affects hundreds of families in Northern Ireland.

The chairman of the Corporate Services Committee, Councillor Owen Gawith said, “We endeavour to support charities and causes that make a real difference to people in need, particularly in our local area.  I believe that by lighting up our Civic Centre in blue on 15th May, it will not only show support of this important cause but increase awareness at a local level of such a debilitating disease.”

Huntington’s Disease Association NI Chief Executive, Sorcha McGuinness said, “Huntington’s Disease affects men and women, usually between 30-50 years, and causes gradual loss of control over thoughts, feelings, movement, behaviour, communication and swallow. Every child born to a parent with Huntington’s Disease has a 50% chance of developing the disease. Sometimes several generations and members of a family will have the disease at the same time.”
