June 25, 2018
The Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Cllr Uel Mackin, welcomed guests to Lagan Valley Island this morning (25 June) for this year’s Flag Raising Ceremony in support of Armed Forces Day which takes place on the 30th June.
The ceremony was attended by Lieutenant Colonel Frankland, Captain Adam Chaytor, 2Rifles; the Rt Hon Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP, representatives from Armed Forces organisations, Elected Members and Chief Executive, Dr Theresa Donaldson.
Addressing guests the Mayor said: “The raising of this morning’s flag is a sign of respect and gratitude. Flag Raising Ceremonies are taking place at this very minute across the length and breadth of the UK and together we stand, showing solidarity to all those who have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces; both domestically and overseas.
“We are extremely proud of our long established history with the Armed Forces in the City and this ceremony is a salute to the Armed Forces and the Veterans for all they have done and all that will do in the future. Today is a time to reflect on the service of our military men and women and their families and acknowledge our deepest gratitude to them.”
The Mayor invited Lieutenant Colonel Frankland to raise the Armed Forces Flag which was followed by a two minute silence.
Armed Forces Day takes place this year on Saturday 30 June with celebrations commencing Monday 25 June when the Armed Forces Day flag is raised on buildings and famous landmarks around the country. The flag is an acknowledgement of the bravery, commitment and achievements of the Armed Forces, and pays a special tribute to those who have been injured or sadly lost their lives in the line of duty.
The National Event in 2018 will be held in Llandudno, North Wales and local events will be taking place right across the UK.
