Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council embrace Bike Week

June 22, 2015

Residents and staff of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council got on their bikes last week to participate in the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event, Bike Week 2015.

Part of a national campaign and organised in conjunction with Travelwise NI, the aim of Bike Week is to encourage people to take up cycling and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life.

As part of the initiative on the 18th June the Council encouraged employees to come to work on two wheels! Children from Brooklands Primary School and Lisnasharragh Primary School, along with Council staff cycled along the Comber Greenway to the Billy Neill MBE Soccer Centre of Excellence on Friday 19th June.

Halfords were also on hand to provide biking advice and free bike safety checks. To finish the week off, mountain bike enthusiasts took part in mountain bike trails at Castleward.

Delighted to see so many people taking part, Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett said, “Bike Week is an excellent initiative to encourage residents to leave the car at home and get active.

“I would ask everyone to get on their bike, rethink their everyday journeys and make the switch to one of the most convenient ways to get around.

"Not only are we trying to promote a greener and more sustainable environment to live and work in but we also want to inspire people to lead healthier lifestyles.”
