Life Saving at the LeisurePlex Retains Top Award

Lagan Valley LeisurePlex has retained for a second year the 'Jack Monaghan Shield' for life saving activity presented by the NI Branch of the Royal Life Saving Society for completing the most Lifesaving Awards during 2014 at this facility.

Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Council's Leisure & Community Development Committee, speaking about the life saving achievement award, said: "The Council is delighted that its flagship pool facility has retained the Shield in recognition of the hard work of its Life Saving School.  To have the hard work of its instructors officially recognised by the NI Branch of the Royal Life Saving Society is excellent.  The LeisurePlex gained the most points for completed life saving and life support awards achieved during 2014.

"The Council is always keen to assist in ensuring the safety of its residents and their families when around water.  It can present a real hazard and danger to individuals if they are not careful, and the Life Saving School plays an important part in addressing this.  The Scheme being taught was developed by the Royal Lifesaving Society and has three stages: Bronze, Silver and Gold, with four programmes within each.  It is great that a significant number of local children have successfully completed an Award this year, building on the success in previous years,” concluded Alderman Porter.

The Life Saving School candidates develop their personal fitness, knowledge, skill and judgment about various different lifesaving techniques when undertaking their Award.

You can enrol in the Rookie Lifeguard Scheme if you aged between 8 and 12 years of age.  This scheme features swimming and lifesaving skills such as CPR, rope throwing and safe methods of water rescue supported by water safety education, thereby allowing participants to enjoy swimming as an activity and, vitally, to protect their lives should an accident occur in or out of the water.
