Crewe United FC and Warrington FC Kick Off the Challenge Cup

The annual “Challenge Peace Cup” kicked off between Crewe United and Warrington Town resulting in a five goal thriller at the Lisburn stadium.

The “Challenge Peace Cup”, which is played at alternate grounds each year, aims to extend the hand of peace on the pitch and strengthen relationships in this the 22nd anniversary of the IRA bombing of Warrington.
 
The match was eagerly watched by the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh, Councillor Thomas Beckett and Chairman of the Leisure & Community Development Committee, Alderman Paul Porter, along with the Mayor of Warrington, Councillor Jeff Settle and Lady Mayoress of Warrington, Jean Settle.
 
Welcoming the visiting team, the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett said, “It is a great pleasure to have been able to welcome the Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Warrington along with Warrington Town Football Club to the City of Lisburn & Castlereagh.
 
“Both teams have played the Challenge Peace Cup for a number of years and it is a privilege to continue to build on this relationship between the two football clubs and Councils.”
 
The Chairman of the Leisure & Community Development Committee, Alderman Paul Porter added, “The Peace Cup always promises to be a great match and this year was no exception with plenty of goals and a nail-biting finish, which culminated in a fantastic win for the home side for the first time with a close 3-2 victory.
 
“Prior to the match we were also delighted to showcase the City with a special visit to Dundrod so the visitors could see at first hand the famous Ulster Grand Prix circuit, home of the world`s fastest road race.
 
“I would like to thank both Warrington Town and Crewe United for a great match and wish both teams every success for the forthcoming season.”
