Council Visits Local School Horticultural Club

Lisnagarvey High School set up a Horticultural Club earlier this year and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council provided compost for it to use to start growing flowers and vegetables.

Councillor Janet Gray MBE, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee and Alderman James Tinsley, Vice-Chair of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee recently visited the Horticultural Club.

Speaking about the visit Councillor Gray MBE, said: “I enjoyed hearing from the pupils of Lisnagarvey High School about their new Horticultural Club and the types of flowers and vegetables they are growing.  This new club is a perfect use of the school facilities and the pupils can either take some of the produce home or sell it to family and friends to raise money for new equipment, materials and planting containers.  The pupils have grown a wide range of flowers from petunias to marigolds and vegetables ranging from potatoes to celery.

“By taking the vegetables home the pupils are playing their part in healthy eating and perhaps saving their parents a trip to the shops.  Also their entrepreneurial spirit in selling items they have grown to raise money to sustain the Club is excellent.   I wish the pupils of Lisnagarvey High School every future success with their Horticultural Club.”

Dobbies of Lisburn sponsored the Club through the provision of a variety of plant plugs and B & Q Sprucefield also donated some compost.
