Council to reopen the car parks at its parks and open spaces

All council owned car parks adjoining Lisburn Castlereagh parks and open spaces will reopen from Wednesday 27th May at 9am. This decision is in line with DAERA, other councils and a number of public bodies as part of a gradual phased approach to recovery. 

The council had kept its car parks closed since late March to play its part in slowing down the spread of coronavirus locally.

Alderman James Tinsley, Leisure & Community Development Committee Chairman, speaking about the phased reopening of its outdoor spaces, said: “After five weeks, we reopened our parks to allow local residents to exercise while following one way systems that were put in place where possible.  At that time to ensure only local residents used our parks we kept the adjoining car parks closed as most green spaces are within walking, running or cycling distance. 

“Now that the NI Executive has plans in place to relax the lockdown measures we are pleased to reopen the car parks at all our parks and open spaces from next Wednesday.  We hope this measure will prevent the parking at the side of roads, on grass verges and in residential areas that has been taking place to date.  However, please be advised these car parks are for the use of park users only.”

Children’s play parks, toilets and mobile traders at these locations will remain closed.

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council would like to remind everyone to be sensible about how far they travel once car parking is available, continue to respect social distancing measures and dispose of their rubbish in the bins provided.
