Council Partners with Phoenix Cycling Club for annual Sportive

April 5, 2018

Phoenix Cycle Club is teaming up with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council this year to host its Annual Sportive on Sunday 6th May 2018 starting at the Salto National Gymnastic Centre Car Park, Lisburn.

There are three route options available for participating cyclists- - one around 80km, a longer route stretching to 110km and shorter route of 50km for the novice cyclists and families. The two longer routes will cover Castlewellan and we ask all road users to be mindful of each other as there are two other cycle events taking place in this area.

Registration will be from 9.15am – 9.45am on the 6th May with the Sportive starting at 10.00am.

Each participating cyclist must have insurance cover via membership to a national cycling association such as Cycling Ireland. For people who are not members of Cycling Ireland an Event Licence Fee will be available for £5 and it offers the same insurance cover as full members.

The Mayor, Councillor Tim Morrow, speaking about the Sportive, said: “As an avid cyclist I am delighted that the Council has the opportunity to partner with Phoenix Cycle Club to take cyclists of all abilities through the picturesque County Down, skirting the commanding Slieve Croob mountain, known locally as 'The Twelve Cairns' before turning North East to avoid the Mountains of Mourne and back to Lisburn.  I would like to remind participants that cycle helmets must be worn and rules of the road must be followed at all times.  Looking forward to seeing you on the day.”

All money raised from this cycle challenge will be donated to two great charities Corrymeela Community and Habitat for Humanity, which are the Mayor’s Charities.   These worthwhile charities are continuing to break new ground and reach deeper into the heart of local communities throughout Northern Ireland and beyond in order to really make a difference to people’s lives.

All routes will finish at Lagan Valley Island where there will be a post ride BBQ and the opportunity to regale with cycling companions about your experience.
