Council Launches Sports Bursary Award
November 19, 2021
Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh has opened nominations for the 2021 Sports Bursary for Young Athletes. The aim of the award is to recognise the wealth of sporting talent in the council area and help young people reach their potential in sport.
To apply, athletes must be aged 18 years and under and live within the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area. Sporting experience must include playing at Ulster, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Great Britain or County Minor Development squad level.
Councillor Sharon Skillen, Chair of the Leisure & Community Development Committee welcomed the award. She said, “The Council has a proud history of sporting success and the Sports Bursary is an opportunity to recognise the wide range of talent we have on our doorstep.
“There are many young people who spend several hours training each week in pursuit of excellence in their chosen sport. The bursary award will provide financial help towards reaching this goal and hopefully inspire the next generation of sporting heroes.”
Jimmy Walker, Chairman of Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh added, “I am delighted that Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh can work in partnership with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council to recognise the many young people who are excelling in their sport.
“A bursary of £150 is available to support athletes with some of the costs of training, travel and equipment associated with their sport.
“I would encourage young people who are eligible to apply for the award and help build on the success achieved by previous bursary winners.”
