COUNCIL ‘GREENS’ UP LISBURN CITY CENTRE

A newly installed 20m ‘living wall’ in Lisburn city centre has made the area next to the Graham Gardens Multi-storey Cark Park look decidedly greener.

Made up of thousands of plants this new installation is supported by a high tech system to monitor irrigation levels. The ‘living wall’ sits in a new pocket park, which includes seating and other environmental upgrades to provide a much improved experience for those visiting the city centre or using this route to join the main Bow Street shopping area.

Alderman Allan Ewart MBE, Chair of the council’s Development Committee said: “On behalf of the council I am delighted to see this regenerative and attractive display in our city centre; and I encourage everyone to experience and enjoy the installation.

The green living wall is a real show piece, and with summer now here we hope it will continue to flourish.

“It is part of a wider scheme delivered across the city centre by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and was part funded by the Department for Communities.  Other projects in the scheme included: a pocket park area developed on Bridge Street and the installation of artistic murals on Haslems Lane, which saw the council working with digital art students from SERC College to design modern depictions of the city’s story. The final student artwork is displayed on the walls along this popular thoroughfare for everyone to see.

“Other clearance and screening on tired and derelict sites has been carried out to improve the look of the whole city centre. The council will continue, through initiatives like this delivered through its city centre management team, to support the city centre economy by improving the visitor experience.  An ambient general environment in our city centre will encourage new and local people to support the local retailers,” concluded Alderman Ewart MBE.
