Council awards £14,675 to local communities

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has provided grant support of £14,675 to 30 voluntary, community groups and faith-based organisations, to recognise the tremendous efforts of communities and volunteers who went above and beyond to help others during lockdown.

Each group has been awarded up to £500 to carry out events and activities in their local area to celebrate and recognise community volunteers. The Community Spirit Grant scheme promotes mental health and wellbeing and celebrates community spirit. 

Speaking about the funding, Alderman Michael Henderson MBE, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure & Community Development Committee, said:

“The council is delighted to provide a total of £14,675 worth of financial support to 30 groups across the Lisburn & Castlereagh area, to recognise their outstanding community work. 

“These groups played a fundamental role within local communities during lockdown to meet the needs of the most vulnerable. Local volunteers provided immediate assistance and practical support to those shielding at home and helped residents remain safe. 

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers who stepped up during the height of the pandemic. This funding will help groups recognise their volunteer’s incredible efforts and continue their hard work in the heart of communities.

“We will continue to work closely with all groups to deal with the challenges of Coronavirus and look forward to hearing about how our Community Heroes are making a difference to so many people across Lisburn and Castlereagh.”
