Community heroes in Lisburn & Castlereagh celebrated at local awards ceremony
April 1, 2022
The Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council Mayor’s Community Awards 2022 ceremony was a great success last night (31st March). The Mayor, Alderman Stephen Martin and co-host Glen Pavis welcomed over 100 guests to Lagan Valley Island to celebrate the fantastic work that goes on right across our community every day.
Mayor Martin, speaking at the event, said: “I am honoured as Mayor to have the opportunity to recognise those amongst us who go the extra mile for others. Tonight is a celebration of volunteers and a small way to recognise the invaluable role they play in our community.
“This year’s theme was ‘Believe You Can’ with guests entertained by the amazing Beechlawn School Makaton Choir on the night. I am so grateful to our good neighbours, role models and community champions for all they do day in day out and hope all our nominees know how much we appreciate their efforts.
“I wholeheartedly congratulate our winners on the night. They together represent the good worth working for and I will remember this evening as a very special moment in my Mayoral year!”
Winner of the Mayor’s Choice Award category Elizabeth Johnston, said: “I am absolutely delighted to win this award. The receipt of the Mayor’s Choice Award and the Good Neighbour Award has been a very pleasant shock. I love my village of Royal Hillsborough and am proud to work behind the scenes to keep the village looking attractive and welcoming.”
Brian McDowell Voluntary Commitment to your Community Award winner Maireah Henderson, on receiving her award said: “It is an honour and privilege to receive this award which is named after a committed volunteer in the Lisburn & Castlereagh area for 30 years. I too have been volunteering in the rural community of Lurganville for nearly three decades to bring services and support to rural isolated residents. Like all volunteers I find it rewarding to help others and improve lives.”
Mayor Martin also thanked the Youth Council for their impressive video giving young people their voice at the heart of our community.
The category winners were:
- Youth Champion Award - Grace Cooper from Resurgam Youth Initiative
- Good Neighbour Award - Elizabeth Johnston from Royal Hillsborough
- Brian McDowell Voluntary Commitment to your Community Award - Maireah Henderson from Lurganville & District Community Association
