Comber Greenway signage updated
May 31, 2022
The Comber Greenway is one of the best loved urban greenways in Northern Ireland. It is a seven mile route from Belfast city centre to the heart of the countryside in Comber, cutting through the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area.
Councillor Sharon Skillen, Leisure & Community Development Chair, speaking about the new signage, said: “As a council we are committed to ensuring parks and open spaces in our areas are as accessible as possible. The revision of these signs for the first time since 2008 means that walkers, runners and cyclists can accurately see what the greenway has to offer.”
The Comber Greeway is part of the National Cycle Network – a UK-wide network of signed paths and routes for walking, cycling, wheeling and exploring the outdoors. The Comber Greenway, NCN Route 99, was opened in 2008 along the old Belfast to Comber railway line.
“We are delighted that Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council invested in upgrading these signs along the route,” said Anne Madden, from walking and cycling charity Sustrans. “The old signs had become very faded and some had been vandalised. We worked with the council to update the map and provided useful information for visitors.”
The new signs include a QR code on the Pedal Perks Scheme so cyclists can find the nearest discount retailer in the area. You can read more about Pedal Perks on Sustrans website.
There is also information on the One Path Initiative which is advice to all path users on how to ‘Share, Respect and Enjoy’ everyone’s journey on the Comber Greenway.
