All-Star attendance at GAA Summer Camp

August 14, 2020

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council was delighted to recently host two action-packed GAA Summer camps at Lough Moss Leisure Centre, Carryduff and Kirkwoods Park Playing Fields, Lisburn.

The camp welcomed sixty enthusiastic boys and girls aged 7-12 years to a week-long programme of football, fun and friendship. The aim of the GAA summer camp was to encourage children to take up Gaelic for the first time and to get active, as well as to help develop the skills of existing players in a fun environment.

The summer camp also welcomed guest coach appearances from some of the top GAA talent, including the current Tyrone Captain and 2 time All-Star, Mattie Donnelly. The coaches offered the children a plethora of top tips and advice on how to grow and develop as a player, plus teaching the basic skills of soloing, fist and kick passing, shooting and tackling.

Speaking about the GAA summer camp, Alderman Michael Henderson MBE, Chairman of the council’s Leisure and Community Development Committee said: “It is fantastic to see so many children taking part in the camp, getting active and having fun. The smile on their faces says it all!

“In the absence of the annual GAA Cúl Camps this summer, the council was pleased to be able to offer a replica programme which provided the perfect platform to ensure children didn’t miss out on taking part in their favourite sport or the chance to try something new.

“It was great to see so many guest coaches coming along throughout the week to share their expert knowledge of the game, especially Tyrone Captain and 2 time All-Star, Mattie Donnelly. There’s no better way to learn but to learn from the best!

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved, including all the guest coaches, for organising such a successful camp. I would also like to extend a special word of thanks to St Patrick’s GAC and Carryduff GAC for their continued support throughout the week.”

Also speaking about the GAA Summer Camp, Councillor David Honeyford, Vice Chairman of the council’s Leisure and Community Development Committee said: “As an avid Gaelic fan it was particularly pleasing to see so many children getting involved in the GAA Summer Camp. The camp provided an excellent way for children to take up a new sport, meet new friends and improve as players under the guidance of some of the best coaches and players around. I was particularly impressed with the level of talent on display and I have no doubt that we have some stars in the making!

“The Council is passionate about providing events and initiatives for children of all ages that encourages physical activity and ultimately promotes a healthier and balanced lifestyle.

“I would also like to extend a word of thanks to everyone involved in making this programme a roaring success.”
