Mayor welcomes Warrington Mayor in support of the Challenge Peace Cup

The Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett welcomed the Mayor of Warrington, Councillor Geoff Settle and Lady Mayoress of Warrington, Jean Settle, along with Warrington Town FC and Crewe United to a recent reception held at Lagan Valley Island in support of the annual ‘Challenge Peace Cup’.
The annual Challenge Peace Cup saw Crewe United and Warrington Town extend the hand of peace on the pitch as they continue to build bridges and friendships in this the 22nd anniversary year of the IRA bombing of Warrington.
Welcoming all those involved in strengthening the bonds between Lisburn and Warrington, the Mayor said, “It gives me great pleasure as Mayor to welcome you all once again to the City of Lisburn & Castlereagh.
“Over the past 20 years we have seen how sport can bridge the divide, creating bonds that can never be broken and ensuring that something positive can be salvaged from events so tragic and I’d like to pay tribute to everybody involved in making this happen,” said Councillor Beckett.
“We are pleased to be able to continue to support this event and strengthen relationships through the sport of football.
“The match itself was extremely entertaining and as always very competitive with Crewe United emerging as overall victors with a score of 3-2. Well done to both teams for a fabulous match.”
