Cross Country Challenge held at Billy Neill MBE Soccer Centre of Excellence

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council welcomed 6 talented secondary schools from across the Council area to the Billy Neill MBE Soccer Centre of Excellence to compete in the annual Cross Country Challenge.

The year 8 girls’ event was won by Faith Townsley from Dundonald High School, with Katelyn Fielding, also from Dundonald High School, taking a well-deserved second place and Karolina Tomaseicwz from St. Patrick’s Academy finishing in third.

While in the boys’ year 8 event, William Hicks from Breda Academy crossed the line in first place, followed closely by Craig Hamill from Dundonald High School in second and Reece McCann from Lagan College picking up third place.

Joanna Sheery from Lagan College ran a strong race taking first place in the year 9 girls’ event, followed by Lara Gibson, also from Lagan College, in second place and Faye O’Reagan from Fort Hill Integrated College achieving third place. Ciade McLaren from Fort Hill Integrated College took first place in the boys’ event with Reece McKeown and Ethan Watson, both from Laurelhill College closely following in second and third place.

Lagan College were well represented in the year 10 event with Lily Moore and Tanis Merron crossing the line in first and second place, while Cameron Hamill and Ryan McGoldrick were placed first and second in the boys’ event. Mia Rowan from Laurelhill College and Zak Stevenson from Fort Hill Integrated College both cruised in at third place.

The GCSE girls’ team from Laurelhill College performed extremely well with Zoe Fleming, Ellie Tennyson and Hannah McKibben taking first, second and third place.

Terry Hana from St Patrick’s Academy won the GCSE boys’ event while Dylan Malcolm from Lagan College was close behind in second place. Ben Hunter from Breda Academy took the bronze medal.

Dundonald High School were awarded the overall winning school in the year 8 event, while Fort Hill Integrated College took the accolade in the girls’ year 9 event and Laurelhill College the winning school in the boys’ year 9 event. Lagan College were announced as the overall winning school for both the boys’ and girls’ year 10 event.

Speaking about the event, Mrs Coudiere from Lagan College was pleased with the school’s success. She said: “I am extremely overwhelmed with our achievements in the Cross Country Challenge. The pupils were exceptional throughout the event and I couldn’t be more delighted for them. Their continued hard work and commitment has paid off and they all should be very proud.

“I would like to send my thanks to the Sports Development Unit of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council for organising a great event. I have no doubt that events like this one will continue to inspire pupils from the Council area to stay active. We looking forward to participating next year.”
