The Council helps to identify the 'Unusual Suspects'
September 12, 2016
From Recycle Week, 12th to 18th September, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is asking residents to help identify a few ‘Unusual Suspects’!
Residents in the Council area currently recycle plastic drinks bottles, food and drink cans, cardboard and newspapers, but what about ‘The Unusual Suspects’ such as aerosol cans, foil trays, and toilet roll tubes?
These are often missed although there are lots of places around the home where they can be found – and we need your help to hunt them down! These ‘Unusual Suspects’ can be recycled in your household recycling bin or box.
Keep an eye out for aluminium deodorant and air freshener aerosol cans and add them to your recycling. Paper and cardboard items such as toothpaste boxes and tissue boxes are also on the suspects list as well as plastic shampoo, shower gel and plastic moisturiser bottles which can all be recycled via your local recycling scheme.
In the kitchen we can also identify a whole host of unusual suspects including washing up liquid bottles, soap dispensers, bleach bottles and spray cleaners; all of which can be recycled (with tops and trigger sprays attached).
And don’t forget all your plastic yoghurt pots, butter tubs, fruit and meat trays! Just remove any films, give a rinse and place into your recycling bin or box.
Councillor James Baird, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, said: “Recycling is already making a big difference thanks to the dedication of our residents. Recycling is important, not only does it help reduce the need for landfilling of waste, but it reduces the need for new materials and helps our local environment, so we would urge our residents to keep up the good work!
“Recycle Week is an ideal time for the residents in the Council area to really take a fresh look at their recycling habits, and to see if there are any opportunities to recycle even more items. There are lots of items that can be recycled, but some are lesser known or more ‘unusual’ than others, and so that’s what we’re trying to raise awareness of.”
Please see https://www.lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk/resident/bins-recycling/bin-and-box-collection/what-goes-in-my-bins-and-boxes for more information on what can go into your recycling bin or box.
There are many great benefits to recycling, as many materials can be recycled over and over again. Within the Council area all the recycling is taken to Bryson Recycling, where the materials are sorted before being sent to manufacturers who make it into new products. This saves resources, helps the environment, and supports a thriving recycling economy.
