Stay safe - stay secure this Christmas

November 26, 2020

In the run up to Christmas, Lisburn & Castlereagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) in conjunction with the local police, are reminding people to keep themselves and their property safe.

To promote this message, an advertising and social media campaign are being launched as part of the overall Christmas Crime Prevention campaign. Due to the most recent COVID-19 restrictions that take affect from the 27th November, the campaign will include scams and in particular C0VID-19 scams, a Christmas Crime Prevention menu and the 12 online safety tips.

This is particularly relevant as online purchases are expected to increase during the restricted period. However, if it is appropriate during the period up to Christmas to hold roadshows these will be will be held, subject to restrictions, using PCSP and PSNI gazebos outside retail centres and public transport hubs across the city council area.

Please take the time to visit the social media platforms outlined or visit the PCSP and PSNI stands and have a chat about staying safe in your home, when out shopping and online. In addition, there will be advice on social media in the lead up to Cyber Monday, 30 November, on how to shop safely online.

The Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh PCSP, Councillor Alex Swan speaking at the launch said: “We cannot remind people enough of the importance of looking after themselves and their belongings, particularly at Christmas, when there are gifts bought to give to friends and family.  Please ensure that they are out of sight and not placed below Christmas trees that are visible from outside your home.  Unfortunately there are criminals who will invade your home and steal your personal belongings.  My message to you is clear; make sure you do not invite burglars into your home by not securing it properly and stay ahead of scams by remembering the top tips.”

District Commander for Lisburn & Castlereagh, Superintendent Julie Mullan commented, “As ‘Operation Season’s Greetings’ begins, we want to make sure that everyone in our District has a safe and crime-free Christmas. Our officers and staff will focus on a number of priorities including retail and online crime, road safety and burglary.

“Preventing crime is top of our list and we would encourage our residents and business community to engage with the roadshows and seek out further advice on our website and on our social media platforms. You will see our officers out and about in our city and town centres and they welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have as we work together to keep everyone safe.”
