Sponsored by Decathlon, the awards recognise the achievements and dedication of sporting stars in the Lisburn & Castlereagh area. The winners are selected each month by the Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh Committee and a £100 voucher is awarded to each successful winner.
The summer winners included; Rachel Bethel who won two silver medals in the swimming event at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas; Kurt Walker who secured a bronze medal in the European Boxing Championships in Ukraine and Molly McCormick who won a gold medal in the GB Youth Archery Festival.
Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure & Community Development Committee said, “Sports Personality of the Month is an opportunity to recognise the wealth of sporting talent across the Council area. I appreciate that any achievement in sport is testimony to hours of hard work, training and dedication therefore I am delighted we can acknowledge the success of local athletes through this initiative.”
Jimmy Walker, Chairman of Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh added, “I would like to congratulate all the young people on winning the latest Sports Personality of the Month award. Their sporting achievements are a true inspiration to others who are striving to progress in their chosen sport or represent Lisburn & Castlereagh on a national or international stage.
“Finally I would like to thank Decathlon for kindly sponsoring the initiative and I would warmly encourage other clubs to make the time to nominate an individual who has excelled in their sport.”
