Somme Centenary to be Marked at Lisburn War Memorial on 1st July
June 30, 2016
The Royal British Legion (Lisburn Branch) with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council will hold a service at the War Memorial at Castle Street, Lisburn at 6.45am on Friday 1st July 2016 to commemorate 100 years of the Battle of the Somme. An invitation is extended to members of the public to attend the Service.
The first day of conflict remains the bloodiest day to date. Many of the brave young soldiers who... fought in the First World War were young men from close-knit communities like Lisburn.
The Service, led by Rev Nicholas Dark, the Royal British Legion Padre is expected to last 30 minutes and will include a reading of ‘In Flanders Fields’ by the Deputy Mayor, Alderman Stephen Martin.
The Centenary of the Battle of the Somme provides an opportunity to remember the sacrifice of those who lost their lives and reflect upon the human cost of conflict.
Wreaths will be laid by the Council and the Royal British Legion.
