Shopmobility - keeping Lisburn moving

December 15, 2017

Shopmobility is keeping the people of Lisburn mobile this festive season with a full range of powered scooters, wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs available to anyone with mobility issues.

Available all year-round the valuable Shopmobility scheme operates from Bow Street Mall however, the mobility aids can be used right across Lisburn City Centre with vehicles also available from Lisburn Square and Sprucefield Shopping Centre.

Elected Members recently visited the Lisburn office to find out more.  Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Development Committee, Alderman Allan Ewart, MBE, said: “It is crucial that local people are aware of the service Shopmobility offer.  We have a fantastic range of retail and leisure facilities here in Lisburn and making sure those people with mobility issues are able to get out and about and enjoy these facilities is of great importance.  With the city even busier at this time of year we don’t want anyone feeling isolated.  This free service is easy to use and available to everyone, regardless of age and the Council is delighted to support the charity and highlight the valuable work they do.”

Chairman of the Council’s Corporate Services Committee, Councillor Scott Carson, also visited the office in Lisburn and said: “The Shopmobility scheme is all about giving people their independence.  So whether their mobility issue is temporary through an accident or of a more permanent nature Shopmobility is there to keep you moving.  It can make all the difference to someone’s life if they are able to get out for social functions, exercise, visit friends or simply do some shopping.  Well done to the Lisburn scheme for making a difference to our local community and promoting good practice for accessibility.”

Chair of the Shopmobility Committee, Karen Marshall, explains: “Although the main Shopmobility office is based in Bow Street Mall, the service extends to the wider Lisburn city centre area and beyond, and there are mobility vehicles available from Lisburn Square and Sprucefield Shopping Centre too, meaning that all of the prime shopping and leisure areas of Lisburn can be accessed.  Shopmobility is a charity therefore we depend on people’s generosity, so if you wish to make a donation please contact the Lisburn office.  We are also in need of volunteers to ensure this free service continues to assist local people.  If you can spare a few hours a week we would love to hear from you.  Volunteering is an extremely rewarding experience and we would be delighted to have you on board.  Improving our urban accessibility is important to all our community and for the local traders as well.”

In order to use the Shopmobility scheme in Lisburn you will be required to register at the office in Bow Street Mall, which is on level one of the multi-storey car park (entering from Antrim Street), or at Sprucefield.  If you are not familiar with the use of powered scooters or wheelchairs there are volunteers or security staff willing to show you how to use them and get you signed up if you are not already a member, all you need is proof of name and address.
