March 24, 2021

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has been awarded £33,500 through the Shared History Fund to support the delivery of its Centenary Programme this year.

The grants are distributed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund on behalf of the Northern Ireland Office to support groups who want to deliver events and initiatives marking Northern Ireland’s Centenary Year in a thoughtful, inclusive and engaging way.

The fund attracted significant interest and following a competitive process, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council was one of 39 successful applicants.

Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Nicholas Trimble said:  “Our LCCC Centenary Programme is now well underway with a number of initiatives up and running or ready to be launched in the coming weeks.

“Celebrating the Centenary in a way which is respectful to all traditions is something which is very important to me and I am delighted that our application to the Shared History Fund was successful.

“This funding will enable us to deliver an enhanced programme of events which will ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy.

“I wish to thank the Northern Ireland Office and the National Lottery Heritage Fund for making this funding available to us and I look forward to seeing our programme continue to engage our communities and create positivity and hope for a better year.”

Chair of the Northern Ireland Centenary Working Group, Councillor Scott Carson added:  “As Chair of the Council’s Cross Party Centenary Working Group, I am delighted that we have received this funding. The group has been working hard to develop a programme of initiatives that will engage and inspire local communities across Lisburn and Castlereagh.

“This funding will really help us to achieve our goals as we continue the roll out of our Centenary Programme this year. Keep a look out on our website and social media for more details.”

Mukesh Sharma, Chair, Northern Ireland, The National Lottery Heritage Fund said:  “As a leading funder of heritage throughout the UK, we understand the central role that heritage plays in people’s lives and their communities. We also recognise that there are aspects of heritage that can be challenging.

“However, our experience in supporting partners to navigate difficult periods in our history throughout the Decade of Centenaries demonstrates that there is a way to engage with difficult heritage in a positive way. No one narrative is more important than another, and it’s important we create a space that allows a range of stories to be told.

“We’re delighted to be delivering this funding on behalf of the Northern Ireland Office and have supported projects which will not only mark the Centenary but will show how we can engage with difficult heritage going forward.”
