The beautiful village of Hillsborough was awarded Gold in the Large Village Category and was the Overall Category Winner at the prestigious Britain in Bloom Awards 2018, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society.
The Awards Ceremony took place in the Belfast Waterfront on Friday 18th October. Competition finalists from across the UK attended representing the highest standards of horticultural practices including floral design and display.
The Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Uel Mackin attended the Awards with Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Leisure & Community Development Committee. The Mayor accepted the Awards with Mrs Dawn Mitchell McEntee, Secretary of Hillsborough Community Association.
The Mayor, Councillor Uel Mackin, said: “It is wonderful to see national recognition for all the hard work of everyone involved within Hillsborough. The village looked fabulous this year, and definitely deserved this Gold Award. To compete in this national competition involves significant planning from the design stage through to nurturing and maintaining the displays.
“Hillsborough was judged for its horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility. Immense pride is taken throughout the year to ensure the area is a beautiful and natural space for everyone to enjoy. I would like to congratulate both the local community and the Council team for keeping the village blooming.”
Alderman Paul Porter added: “Hillsborough has had a great week winning two awards at the Best Kept NI Amenity Awards and then being awarded Gold as the best Large Village at Britain in Bloom. To receive Gold in this category is a huge accolade and acknowledges the creativity of our teams in producing such wonderful displays and the high standards that we maintain throughout the year.
“We look forward to showcasing this historic village again in next year’s floral competitions. I would like to commend the local community, schools and businesses who all played such a crucial role in Hillsborough winning these fantastic awards in 2018. Well done everyone!”
