Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is delighted to see Lisburn take the Roses in Town Award for best use of roses in the public realm.  The announcement was made at the 2016 Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition results.

The Mayor, Cllr Brian Bloomfield MBE, Cllr Hazel Legge and Council staff from the Environmental Services Department attended the event yesterday which recognises top gardening talent in Northern Ireland.  Local residents Dawn McEntee, Nessa O’Callaghan and Eleanor and Derek Alexander from Hillsborough, with whom the Council has a close working relationship, also attended yesterday.

The Chairman, of the Environmental Services Committee, Councillor James Baird sent his congratulations on the award’s success.

All 11 eleven councils participated in the competition which is now in its 38th year and a total of 156 entries were received for the award categories.

In the village category Hillsborough Village was awarded joint 3rd place.

The Mayor, Cllr Brian Bloomfield MBE said: “We have a great team of skilled and dedicated gardeners and a history of receiving awards in the Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition, so we are really delighted with the result.

“Standards and creativity in flower planting increase year on year and the competition level is very high indeed.  To win awards the flowers must be at their absolute best.

“Floral displays make everything a little bit brighter and we always look to inject some colour and vibrancy in our displays, whether they be hanging baskets, bedding flowers, roundabout displays or roses in bloom to make the area look as good as we possibly can.

“I would like to congratulate the Council staff for their hard work and the Director in charge of the Department, Mrs Heather Moore,” he concluded.

An awards ceremony will take place in 2017.
